About Game

“Delete-Delete-Delete!” is Dragon King Studios’ submission for Extra Credit’s first ever Extra Game Jam! After browsing some questionable websites and opening some shady emails, the user has unwittingly unleashed a horde of computer viruses onto the system! Fortunately, the viruses are isolated to a small sector of the hard drive for now, but if they aren’t eliminated soon, they may spread to the entire system, wreaking havoc on the user’s programs and files! It’s time to send in VirusHunter, the top name in antivirus software, to scan the sector, delete all threats, and ensure the user’s system is secure once again! The game is a very brief (about one minute long) light gun game controlled via mouse. Shoot the enemies with the left mouse button, reload with the right mouse button. Once all visible enemies are defeated, the camera will move to a new position to reveal the next group of enemies. The game ends when all enemies have been destroyed or the player runs out of health from being attacked. I had planned to include friendly “civilian” programs for the player to rescue, but that proved to be too ambitious for the time allotted. I also had to scrap more complex enemy behavior other than “stand still till the player can see you, then walk in a straight line towards them.” Still, despite its simplicity, I’m pretty happy with how it came out. It might be cool to do a bigger project like this sometime, one where I don't have to figure out how to get it all working in 48 hours! The theme for the first Extra Game Jam was “Awesome Per Second,” taken from an Extra Credits episode of the same name. Immediately upon hearing this, I was fairly certain I would tackle something action-oriented. However, I re-watched the episode to see if I could focus in on an idea. The idea behind “Awesome Per Second” was, essentially, cut out the fluff, only keep the stuff that makes a game “awesome” and skip the boring parts. After that, I zeroed in on the idea of doing a light gun game. I’d been wanting to prototype this idea for a while, being fond of these sort of games whenever I’m able to visit a video arcade (which isn’t often). Some of my favorites are The House of the Dead 2, the Star Wars Trilogy game, and Ghost Squad (all by SEGA, incidentally. They’ve got this genre nailed). These games also fit the idea of “Awesome Per Second” very well due to their format. While home console games are meant to be experienced over the course of several sittings stretched out over weeks or months, arcade games are meant to be much briefer diversions and therefore their players will have much shorter attention spans. If an arcade game loses its player’s interest, they’re going to go spend their quarters on something more exciting. Therefore, to keep players hooked, light gun games go from one action set piece to the next, boom-boom-boom, until the end of the game (assuming the player can even get there!).
